Introduction
In today’s booming craft beer market, presentation matters just as much as the product itself. For online beer retailers, packaging is more than just a protective container—it’s a brand ambassador, a customer’s first tactile experience with the company, and a marketing tool all in one.
When Ales By Mail, a leading online beer retailer, approached LemonTop Creative, they had a clear goal: to create a 4-bottle beer box that was as bright and colourful as their beer selection, practical for logistics, and able to deliver a memorable unboxing experience.
Our challenge was to develop a design that not only housed four 330ml bottles securely, but also showcased the beer labels, told the Ales By Mail story, and provided flexibility for additional beer information.
About Ales By Mail
Ales By Mail is a pioneer in online craft beer retail. Established to bring the best of real ale and craft beer directly to customers’ doors, they work with breweries across the UK and beyond, curating selections that celebrate diversity in beer styles and brewing approaches.
Their customers range from seasoned craft beer enthusiasts to newcomers eager to explore beyond supermarket shelves. Ales By Mail stands out in the market because of their commitment to quality, variety, and convenience.
Packaging plays a key role in their business model—whether it’s subscription boxes, gift packs, or single-purchase bundles, each delivery must arrive safely, look appealing, and represent the brand in a way that makes customers want to order again.
The Brief
The project requirements were clear:
-
Capacity & Fit – Design a box to hold 4 x 330ml bottles of beer.
-
Brand Impact – Ensure the box was bright, colourful, and unmistakably Ales By Mail.
-
Product Visibility – Allow customers to see the beer labels while still keeping the bottles secure.
-
Informative Sides – Incorporate Ales By Mail branding and story on the sides, with space for extra beer details.
-
Logistical Compatibility – Ensure the box could be easily packed into an outer container for shipping.
This meant the packaging needed to be both visually exciting and technically functional—a balance that requires careful design thinking.
Research & Discovery
Our process began with a deep dive into three main research areas.
1. Market Research
We analysed beer gift packaging trends from both online retailers and physical shops. We looked for what works well—eye-catching graphics, easy carrying handles, clear beer visibility—and what could be improved, such as wasteful materials or overly complicated assembly.
2. Competitor Review
We studied competitors like Beer Hawk, HonestBrew, and Beer52 to identify opportunities for Ales By Mail to stand out. Many gift packs used safe, neutral designs; we saw a gap for a bolder, more playful look that reflected the fun of discovering new beers.
3. Logistics & Practicality
We worked closely with Ales By Mail to understand their shipping process. Knowing the outer box dimensions and protective requirements helped us design an inner box that fit perfectly, minimising movement during transit and reducing the risk of breakage.
Design Objectives
From the brief and research, we defined clear objectives for the box design:
-
Visibility – Strategic window cut-outs to show off the bottle labels without compromising structural integrity.
-
Brand Personality – Bright colours, bold typography, and playful graphics that reflect the excitement of receiving new beers.
-
Storytelling – Space to tell the Ales By Mail story, connect with customers, and provide tasting or brewery notes.
-
Durability – Strong enough to hold four glass bottles without bending or collapsing.
-
Ease of Use – Quick to assemble, easy to load, and stackable in outer cartons.
Creative Concept Development
We began the creative process by sketching out multiple box structures and graphic concepts. The work happened in two parallel streams: structural design and graphic design.
Structural Design
We tested several shapes and die-cut options before settling on a sturdy, folded cardboard carrier with:
-
Four individual bottle compartments to prevent clinking and breakage.
-
Front and side cut-outs that frame each bottle label.
-
A fold-over top flap to secure the bottles in place during handling.
The structural design was carefully engineered to be compact and lightweight while maintaining protection.
Graphic Design
We developed three initial style directions for Ales By Mail to consider:
-
Playful & Illustrated – Hand-drawn beer-related icons and doodles scattered across a colourful background.
-
Bold & Typographic – Oversized type and block colours creating a striking visual statement.
-
Travel & Discovery Theme – Evoking the feeling of a beer journey, with map-like textures and compass icons.
After review, we merged elements of Playful & Illustrated with Bold & Typographic, resulting in a design that felt vibrant, friendly, and distinctly Ales By Mail.
Final Design Features
The final box design incorporated all functional and branding requirements:
-
Bright Colour Palette – A mix of warm yellows, deep reds, and electric blues created visual excitement and reinforced brand energy.
-
Illustrated Beer Icons – Small, playful graphics of hops, bottles, and glasses gave the box a craft feel.
-
Large Brand Logo – Placed prominently on the top and sides to maximise recognition.
-
Bottle Label Windows – Precision die-cut openings showcased each beer label, adding intrigue and allowing customers to admire the artwork before opening the box.
-
Informational Panels – Side panels included:
-
A brief Ales By Mail brand story.
-
A space for stickers or printouts listing the beers inside.
-
Website and social media handles for easy customer connection.
-
Production Considerations
Designing a beautiful box is only half the job—it also has to perform in real-world conditions.
We worked with a trusted packaging supplier to ensure:
-
High-Quality Card Stock – Strong enough to hold weight without warping.
-
Sustainable Materials – Recyclable cardboard with eco-friendly inks.
-
Colour Fastness – Bright colours that wouldn’t fade or rub off during transit.
-
Precision Cutting & Folding – To ensure windows aligned perfectly with the bottles.
User Experience & Unboxing
From the moment a customer receives the box, we wanted them to feel excited. The box design:
-
Creates anticipation with visible beer labels.
-
Welcomes them with friendly brand messaging.
-
Feels like a gift even when it’s part of a regular order.
This unboxing experience is key to building customer loyalty—something Ales By Mail values highly.
Marketing Benefits
The box does more than hold beer—it actively supports Ales By Mail’s marketing goals:
-
Shelf Appeal – In retail settings or at events, the box is attractive and attention-grabbing.
-
Brand Recall – Customers remember the fun, colourful design and associate it with positive experiences.
-
Social Media Sharing – The box’s photogenic qualities encourage customers to post their deliveries online, generating free promotion.
The Result
The new 4-bottle box has been a hit with both Ales By Mail and their customers. Key outcomes include:
-
Improved Brand Recognition – The box instantly communicates the fun, curated nature of Ales By Mail’s offering.
-
Operational Efficiency – Staff can assemble and load boxes quickly, and they fit perfectly in shipping outers.
-
Customer Engagement – Positive feedback highlights both the look of the box and the excitement of seeing the beer labels.

Why This Project Worked
This packaging project was successful because we kept three key principles in mind:
-
Form Meets Function – The design works for shipping and display while staying attractive.
-
Customer Experience Focus – The visible labels and colourful graphics enhance the unboxing moment.
-
Brand Alignment – Every design choice reinforces the Ales By Mail personality.
Lessons for Packaging Design
From this project, there are several takeaways for any brand designing retail or e-commerce packaging:
-
Show the Product – Transparency builds trust and curiosity.
-
Think Beyond Protection – Packaging is a storytelling tool.
-
Make It Shareable – Attractive designs have the power to turn customers into brand ambassadors.
Looking Ahead
The success of the 4-bottle box has opened opportunities for Ales By Mail to explore other formats, such as mixed-pack gift boxes, seasonal designs, and limited-edition artwork collaborations with breweries.
With a strong packaging foundation in place, they can now adapt quickly to seasonal trends, special promotions, and collaborative releases while maintaining brand consistency.
