An Adventure with Brightwater

After having great fun working with Brightwater on the development and design of an A3 worksheet as well as a folded leaflet advertising and promoting the Brightwater area, we were tasked with creating a new series of walking maps which would engage with families and encourage them to explore and discover all the great things the Brightwater area has to offer. Discover Brightwater is the name for the area around the River Skerne, in canny County Durham which stretches from the Trimdons in the north, to South Park in Darlington and from Sedgefield in the east to Locomotion in Shildon in the west. Each walking map would focus on a different area of interest such as Hurworth Burn Reservoir, Hardwick Park and Bishop Middleham.

We firstly created a colourful, illustrated folding leaflet for Hurworth Burn Reservoir, which opened up into a whole world of information, things to see and tasks to undertake which the whole family could get involved in. This “Adventure Guide & Map” had, on one side, all the information you needed to enjoy a walk around the reservoir. On the reverse we illustrated a map of the area showing the walking route and points of interest around the reservoir, with Terry and Brenda, our illustrated Brightwater characters getting involved along the way.

The finished article was a beautifully designed and illustrated Adventure Guide & Map which the whole family could enjoy. Brightwater were extremely happy with what we had created and were impressed by how eyecatching and engaging the maps were, especially with the illustrated characters being seamlessly integrated into the design. We’ve now been tasked with creating the next 7 maps in the series so keep an eye out for those and see how much of Brightwater you can discover.
